Contemporary innovation and technology management is built on theories from management and economics, and applies quantitative methods and large-scale data analysis to examine scientific activities and innovation phenomena. It is therefore often regarded as the “science of science.” This field studies the formation, evolution, interaction, and competitive mechanisms of scientific knowledge and technological innovation systems. Its research scope spans multiple disciplines, including management, economics, finance, accounting, and engineering. It combines theoretical depth with practical relevance and demonstrates a highly interdisciplinary research orientation.
This issue highlights how innovation is shaped by the ways knowledge is protected, shared, and connected. The articles examine the effects of trade secret protection and corporate disclosure on knowledge diffusion, the role of professional networks and open innovation in Hsinchu’s high-tech ecosystem, and the balance of connectivity needed to foster innovation within firms. Together, they illustrate how the science of science can help us better understand the complex mechanisms behind innovation.
