Hidden Treasures: Rare Collections on the NTU Campus

Prof. Chi-Shiou Lin, University Librarian, National Taiwan University

Since its establishment in 1928, National Taiwan University (NTU), originally founded as Taihoku Imperial University during the Japanese colonial era, has actively investigated the history, nature, industries, and resources of Taiwan, Mainland China, and the South Seas. Driven originally by the historical and strategic circumstances of the time, this endeavor enabled the university to preserve several invaluable historical documents and artifacts across various fields. These items later became essential teaching and research materials for the university’s faculty and students. Over time, the university has established numerous specialized collections and galleries to store these treasures with the appropriate care and to facilitate the continued acquisition of such treasures. These collections are among NTU’s most prized assets.

In this edition of NTU Highlights, we will introduce four key institutions responsible for the collections on campus, including the NTU Library, the NTU Museum of Medical Humanities, the NTU History Gallery, and the NTU Archives. We will provide an overview of their founding purposes, current operations, and notable collections, hoping to inspire readers to further explore and engage with these collections. We invite you to embark on this journey to discover the hidden treasures of NTU.
