Knowledge Spillovers, NTU Alumni Networks, and Open Innovation in Hsinchu’s High-Tech Cluster

Hsinchu’s high-tech cluster has long been one of the most important engines of Taiwan’s industrial upgrading. A notable feature of this ecosystem is the strong presence of NTU EMBA alumni, many of whom hold key positions in semiconductor, electronics, and technology-related firms, including TSMC, Google and MediaTek. The establishment of the NTU EMBA Hsinchu Alumni Association further strengthens these personal and professional ties by creating a local platform for continuous interaction, mutual support, and knowledge exchange.

Another important component of this ecosystem is TSMC’s Open Innovation Platform® (OIP). Rather than competing directly with its customers and partners, TSMC focuses on its core competence in wafer manufacturing and positions itself as an enabler of innovation across the broader semiconductor value chain. Through OIP, TSMC integrates process technology, design enablement, IP, EDA tools, packaging, and ecosystem partners to reduce design barriers and accelerate commercialization. This collaborative model allows value and profits to be shared across the industry, supporting a co-prosperity logic rather than a zero-sum competitive logic.

Such a technology ecosystem generates dense networks, frequent technical interaction, and knowledge spillovers. These spillovers facilitate the diffusion of advanced technologies, improve collective problem-solving capabilities, and contribute to Taiwan’s continuous technological progress. In this context, NTU and the NTU EMBA Hsinchu Alumni Association play meaningful bridging roles. By connecting managers, entrepreneurs, engineers, and professionals across different firms and sectors, it serves not only as an alumni organization but also as a key networking and technology-exchange platform within the Hsinchu science park ecosystem.
