Looking at the academic publication trends at NTU in recent years, the average number of papers published per faculty member is highest in the life sciences and natural sciences. Regarding citation metrics over the past five years, clinical medicine in the life sciences field holds the highest average citations per paper, followed by chemistry and physics in the natural sciences, and materials science in engineering. Other remarkable fields include environmental science and ecology, molecular biology and genetics, psychiatry and psychology, immunology, space science, neuroscience and behavior, microbiology, interdisciplinary studies, geology, plant and animal science, and biology and biochemistry. Papers published in top-tier and distinguished journals [1] exhibit significantly higher average citations per paper. In the past year, the number of papers in top-tier and distinguished journals has nearly doubled in clinical medicine and molecular biology and genetics. Enhancing international research collaborations has been strategy for increasing highly-cited publications, as NTU’s global partnerships continue to expand its research impact. Notably, the humanities and social sciences fields have also seen growth in publications in top international journals.
These academic accomplishments are reflected in NTU’s performance in major research awards. Over the past three years (2021–2023), more than 100 faculty members have been recognized with awards like the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Outstanding Research Award and the Ta-You Wu Memorial Award, showcasing NTU’s academic excellence. Furthermore, research and teaching awards often complement each another. For example, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which achieved the highest award rate at the 2024 NSTC Ta-You Wu Memorial Award, has successfully passed every accreditation cycle, including the latest specifications set by the European Aerosol Conference 2024, since first receiving accreditation from the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan in 2006. By creating a comfortable, friendly, and efficient working and learning environment and providing excellent teaching and research facilities, we have attracted and nurtured many outstanding educators, who have, in turn, generated a wealth of research achievements.
[1] Top-tier journals refer to Nature, Science, and Cell; distinguished journals refer to those with an exceptional quality of research, as determined by the Research and Development Committee of NTU’s Office of Research and Development.
