Crossing Language and Learning Barriers: Building a Strong Start at NTU

For many international students, the first months abroad bring two major challenges: language and academic adjustment. At National Taiwan University (NTU), these challenges are met through a comprehensive support system designed to help students build confidence and thrive.

Chinese is more than a classroom subject; it serves as a gateway to local culture and everyday life, helping international students settle into their new environment and build meaningful connections within the community with greater ease and confidence.

To support this transition, NTU offers more than 50 Chinese language courses each semester, attracting over 1,000 enrollments and spanning 11 proficiency levels from beginner to advanced. This structured curriculum helps students develop their language skills progressively at their own pace.

Academic support is equally important. NTU provides both Chinese- and English-language academic advising to help students clarify study goals, plan coursework, and adapt to new learning environments. Through peer tutoring, students receive support in subjects ranging from calculus and physics to specialized disciplinary courses, helping them stay on track academically.

For those needing more personalized guidance, faculty mentors may arrange one-on-one support tailored to individual academic and learning needs. This layered system of advising and mentorship enables students to progress steadily while developing greater independence and confidence.

Financial wellbeing is another key part of a successful study abroad experience. NTU offers more than 30 scholarships, work-study opportunities, and living assistance programs specifically for international students, helping reduce financial pressure and allowing students to focus on learning and personal growth.

At NTU, success is supported not only through academic instruction but also through language learning, mentorship, and practical assistance—creating an environment where international students can settle into university life with confidence and shape meaningful paths for their future.
