Anatomizing Security: Historical and Contemporaneous

On the afternoon of June 5, University of California, Berkeley political science professor Prof. Aila M. Matanock delivered a lecture titled “Inviting Intervention: Statebuilding by Delegating Security,” exploring the interaction between peace elections and post-conflict statebuilding, hosted by Professor S. Philip Hsu. An internationally recognized authority on post-conflict governance and international intervention, Prof. Matanock is acclaimed for her book Electing Peace.

On the morning of June 6, the series concluded with University of California, San Diego economics professor Prof. Eli Berman presenting “Economics and National Security since Adam Smith: A Brief History,” hosted by Professor Chih-Sheng Hsieh. Prof. Berman traced the historical evolution of market institutions and national security from the era of Adam Smith to the present.

Covering a broad range of topics—from deterrence theory, conflict data analysis, and international intervention to the economics of security—this lecture series showcased NTU’s academic depth and research capacity in international relations and security studies. It strengthened scholarly dialogue between NTU faculty, students, and the global academic community, reinforced connections with leading universities and research institutions worldwide, and fostered deeper understanding and public awareness in Taiwan of pressing international security issues.
