Exclusive Interview with the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Robotics (AIROBO)

Spanning seven colleges with the participation of over 80 professors, the strength of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Robotics (AIROBO) lies in building platforms that develop meaningful connections. These connections include internal collaborations within the university as well as partnerships with industry and international partners.

Internally, AIROBO continuously organizes exchange events, not only providing interested professors with access to cutting-edge information but also facilitating regular interactions among interdisciplinary scholars.  This enables them to form collaborative research teams. As early as 2017, AIROBO facilitated collaboration among scholars in fields such as biomedicine, robotics, and cognitive behavioral science. Together, they secured a project sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, leading to the establishment of the Medical and Health Care Center (MAHC). This initiative applies AI to various healthcare sectors, including disease detection and diagnosis, emergency workflow, and companionship care, and more. MAHC also enables direct collaborations with the National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei Veteran General Hospital, and Shuang Ho Hospital, and collaborations with corporations such as ASUS, NVIDIA, and EBM Technologies.

The connections between AIROBO and industry continue to expand as AI applications grow.  For instance, collaborating with major electronics manufacturer Pegatron to integrate AI into manufacturing processes, and with Wistron to develop a “cognitive robot” capable of judgment and reasoning. Under the AIROBO program, two start-up companies have emerged: one specializing in AI-enable pancreatic cancer detection and advanced AI technologies for medical image analysis (PanCAD.ai) and the other specializing in sleep and respiratory health care (Shengtsai Medical Technology). Furthermore, AIROBO members are involved in developing generative AI models to assist humanities researchers in quickly accessing required resources from existing databases and making Taiwan’s cultural and historical data easily accessible to the public through dialog and interaction.

In the international arena, AIROBO leverages NTU’s strengths through close exchanges with the University of Tsukuba (UT) and Tohoku University in Japan and the University of Toronto in Canada. For example, AIROBO collaborates with Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (C-AIR) and hospital at UT to continuously exchange the latest research findings in digital healthcare, aiming to position NTU and Taiwan overall as a hub for international AI research.
