The Digital Learning Revolution at NTU

The establishment of a digitalized campus is one of our focal points for advancement. The NTU COOL digital teaching and learning platform aims to lower the barriers of using digital tools to teach, to foster students’ self-directed learning, and to continually bring forth more possibilities for teaching and learning. NTU COOL offers features such as video learning, online interaction, and learning footprint tracking to enhance the teaching efficiency  and improve student engagement. Additionally, our university team has made important contributions in developing the automatic generation of Chinese and English subtitles for videos, further enhancing learning efficiency. Under our policy of promoting blended learning, over 5,000 courses are offered on NTU COOL every semester. The university is dedicated to continuously investing in the development and improvement of the platform, ensuring that NTU COOL continues to evolve and remain a cutting-edge technology.

In addition to optimizing our digital teaching platform, since 2020, the university has also taken the lead nationwide in establishing the “Future Classroom.” Incorporating concepts such as Internet of Things (IoT), Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), and Project/Problem-Based Learning (PBL), these classrooms are equipped with touch screens, wireless projection, audio–visual control system, and other devices that are used to support various teaching scenarios, fostering an  participatory learning atmosphere. Currently, there are  more than 60 Future Classrooms throughout the university, some of which are equipped with VR devices for the practice and promotion of immersive teaching.

Along with the establishment and optimization of digital hardware and software, the university spares no effort in promoting open online courses. Currently, we have over 280 OpenCourseWare (OCW) courses available, as well as 69 Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on the world’s largest learning platform, Coursera. Our university is also proud to have several faculty members who were honored with the “Open Education Award for Excellence” by the Taiwan Open Course and Education Consortium in 2023, receiving distinctions of excellence or special merit. These courses provide free, unrestricted learning opportunities for learners globally, thereby eliminating educational inequality and contributing to the realization of our sustainable development goals.

In terms of digital literacy, our university plans to offer relevant general education courses under three major focal points: “digital reading and skills,” “digital applications and digital society,” and “digital thinking.” These courses aim to foster in students the knowledge, skills, and modes of thinking that are necessary in the digital era, thereby preparing them to adapt to the future digital environment and confront any challenges.

These efforts not only underscore our university’s leading position in educational innovation but also provide students with a richer, more interactive learning environment, which enables students to thrive in the digital age and in turn nurtures future leaders in the digital era.
