The College of Design and Innovation (Stanley Wang D-School), National Taiwan University continues to bridge tradition and innovation through its course The Art and Practice on Music Cooperation, which encourages students to explore diverse cultural landscapes and develop a broader, more inclusive appreciation of music. Through local field studies and public engagement, the course fosters cross-disciplinary musical connections and creative collaboration.
On December 7, 2025, D-School joined forces with the Tamsui Beiguan Ensemble, with strong support from the Tamsui Historical Museum, to present the outdoor concert Wind Through the Pines SONATA – Listening in Tamsui at Fort San Domingo. The performance brought together 18 NTU students and veteran Beiguan artists, centering on the classic Beiguan piece Wind Through the Pines (Feng Ru Song) to showcase a vibrant dialogue between traditional culture and contemporary youth creativity.
The concert opened with selected passages of Wind Through the Pines, co-performed by ensemble artists and NTU students, symbolizing an intergenerational encounter and cultural resonance. This was followed by five original student compositions inspired by the same piece, incorporating elements of rock, classical music, electronic sound, soundscapes, and improvisation. Through a youthful musical language, students reinterpreted the spirit of Beiguan, demonstrating fresh perspectives and creative extensions of traditional music.
Adjunct Associate Professor Chia-Fen Tsai noted that students displayed remarkable collaborative spirit throughout the course. Under the guidance of instructors Wei-Hong Weng, Davis Tsai, Shan-Wei Chen, and Ta-Chien Lin, students supported one another across diverse roles, including visual design, mastering, interactive design, stage management, hosting, PA, and production coordination.
Special thanks were extended to the Tamsui Historical Museum for leading early-stage cultural explorations of Tamsui’s 400-year history and for providing a world-class venue that enabled students to fully realize their creative potential, resulting in a highly successful performance.
