Interdisciplinary Wormholes: Law, Medicine, and Technology in Motion

Instead of being bound by classrooms or national borders, students in the NTU–Hamburg collaborative course moved between Taipei and Hamburg, from lecture halls to hospitals, and from theory to lived practice. In 2025, the program focused on the legal challenges of AI in healthcare, offering a vivid example of how law, medicine, and technology can converge in motion.

The Taipei phase examined issues such as liability in AI-assisted diagnosis, anonymization of medical data, algorithmic transparency, and patient autonomy. Lectures were complemented by site visits to the Ministry of Justice Academy for the Judiciary, the Shilin District Prosecutors Office, and the NTU Cancer Center. Cultural visits to the National Palace Museum and the Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park further showed how Taiwan’s legal framework is tied to history and collective memory.

In Hamburg, the program expanded into clinical observation and a European legal context. At the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, students explored AI applications in radiology and digital medicine, and at the renowned Martini-Klinik they observed live surgery while considering the ethical and legal questions raised by AI tools in practice. Daily interactions offered additional insights into German social values and professional culture, turning the exchange into an immersive learning experience.

The course culminated in joint student presentations on topics ranging from data protection and intellectual property to algorithmic bias and informed consent. These projects showcased not only solid legal reasoning but also cross-cultural sensitivity and teamwork.

By moving through this “interdisciplinary wormhole,” students experienced first-hand how law, medicine, and technology converge. For NTU Law, this course underscores a commitment to training future legal professionals who can think across borders, disciplines, and cultures—an essential step in co-creating tomorrow’s legal education.
