Open Major at NTU
Prof. Lin-Chi Chen, Director of Center for General Education, National Taiwan University

As society undergoes rapid transformation, higher education is redefining itself through a learner-centric model and shifting from specialization to a more holistic approach. This shift has introduced diverse and innovative teaching methodologies, now embraced as a global trend. In 2019, NTU launched the learner-centered Future NTU Initiatives, aiming to break down disciplinary barriers and foster a vision that promotes both self-actualization and collective wisdom.

To further support this vision, NTU has integrated academic and administrative resources to collaboratively establish the INT system—Illuminating, Navigating, and Transforming—a comprehensive student support framework that encourages self-directed learning. This framework offers academic advising to illuminate students' interests and goals, modular curricula such as Specialization Programs and Credit Programs to empower them in pursuing flexible and goal-oriented learning, and the University Interdisciplinary Bachelor's Program (UIBP) to transform traditional degrees in alignment with individual aspirations. In addition, the Transdisciplinary Bachelor’s Degree Program (TBD) is designed to nurture innovative thinking. Together, these programs provide NTU students with opportunities to explore interdisciplinary and innovative learning pathways, unlocking new possibilities under the "Open Major" initiative.
