The Current State and Development of NTU’s Open Online Courses: Exploring Diverse Learning Styles through Rich Resources

NTU offers over 350 open courses, primarily available on its OpenCourseWare website and YouTube channel, with an additional over 70 courses hosted on the international platform Coursera for self-directed learning. As digital teaching has developed, NTU has gradually integrated these resources into our teaching practices and encouraged faculty to utilize them in hybrid teaching environments.

For instance, the course "Programming for Business Computing" adopts an "extra-large class size with small discussion group" model, accommodating up to 1,000 students in-person. Participants are required to watch course content on Coursera before the class, allowing time for Q&A and fostering interaction among students, instructors, and teaching assistants. This innovative approach has successfully advanced the flipped classroom model.

Meanwhile, to encourage on-campus students to try out new modes of learning, NTU has incorporated some online courses into the massive open online course (MOOC) credit transfer program. Students can earn credits by taking online courses and passing in-person examinations. From the second semester of the 2018–2019 academic year to the second semester of the 2023–2024 academic year, over 3,100 enrollments were recorded in this system. Moreover, NTU has also launched the "MOOC Project for High School Students," offering 20 courses on the "Junyi Academy" platform. This initiative provides diverse options for self-directed learning, enabling more students to explore NTU’s high-quality open online resources.

Students are using their own laptops to complete the in-class computer-based exam for the "Programming for Business Computing" course. This course follows a "Lecture Video + Office Hour" model, with most lectures delivered via Coursera online courses rather than in class. The lecture theater is reserved for student Q&A sessions and computer-based exams.

In addition to hosting courses on its official website, NTU OCW runs a dedicated YouTube channel to broaden its reach. In recent years, the channel has surpassed 100,000 subscribers and earned the Silver Creator Award from YouTube. Pictured is the Silver Creator Award presented in 2023.
