Recruiting and Nurturing Young International Scholars

NTU has promoted programs for recruiting and nurturing young research talents internationally, including the Doctoral Students Overseas Research Grant Program, which encourages and assists faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students with overseas visiting research opportunities from the Ministry of Education (MOE), and the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). As of now, 638 postdoctoral researchers (294 non-Taiwanese nationals) have been recruited, and 194 scholars have been honored as Yushan Young Fellows by the MOE from 2018 to 2022, of which 49 (about 25%) are from NTU. Through the program, scholars are able to obtain internationally competitive salaries and research funding, allowing international talents to root in Taiwan's academic environment and enhancing global influence of Taiwan's higher education.

NTU's diverse resources for interdisciplinary collaboration, vigorous research environments, and robust support for new faculty members have attracted many outstanding international scholars. For example, Professor Jian-Da Lin from the Department of Biochemical Science and Technology received funding from MOE and NSTC as a Yushan Young Scholar in 2021. Later on, he was selected out of thousands of candidates to receive an Early Career Faculty Travel Grant from the American Association of Immunologists. Professor Lin chose NTU for its rich resources, excellent students, and the development of multi-omics approaches needed for precision medicine, where research can accurately identify biomarkers or targets and investigate the function of cells in different diseases and disease development. Another Yushan Young Scholar, Professor Chaw-Keong Yong from the Department of Physics, values NTU for its enthusiasm towards basic science research and international collaboration. He has also received support from MOE and NSTC to develop ultrafast optical spectroscopy techniques and demonstrate how van der Waals materials can improve efficiency and reliability in semiconductor applications.

The aforementioned scholars are only two examples of international researchers recruited by NTU through successful programs. Moving forward, NTU will continue to connect with the international community to build up its research capacity, help students develop global perspectives, and enhance international visibility.
