The NTU EMI Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) has developed the EMI Plus Teaching Enhancement Workshop (hereafter referred to as the EMI Plus workshop). As an essential resource for improving teaching practices in EMI, this workshop aims to meet the needs of university faculty nationwide by tackling the domestic EMI challenges with pragmatic strategies and enhancing instructional skills through hands-on practice and instant peer-driven constructive feedback.
TLC invited the NTU faculty and personnel who have acquired outstanding EMI teaching awards, to form the workshop development committee and collectively design its content. The EMI theme-based content includes EMI experience sharing, student challenges and solutions, interactive digital tools applications, AI-powered lesson planning, and faculty challenges and solutions. They all incorporate interactive group activities and hands-on practice to ensure applicability in the regular EMI classroom settings.
The EMI Plus workshop has also integrated the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) as an essential component for improving teaching practice. Participants practice multiple instructional strategies, recognize the importance of establishing a positive learning environment, and explore individual differences in contemporary learning environments, fostering increased competence and confidence as facilitators of learning.
Structured in groups of four, participants explore the ISW-based content, including lesson planning with the BOPPPS model (bridge-in, objective, pre-assessment, participatory learning, post-assessment, summary), constructive feedback guidelines, and three rounds of the 40-minute ISW lesson cycle (setting up learning environment, micro-teaching, reflection, and constructive peer feedback). Moreover, it is an excellent opportunity for them to apply the EMI theme-based content to practice.
In conclusion, the EMI Plus workshop is a transformative platform that fosters excellence in EMI teaching and learning tailors to domestic needs. Its innovative approaches, collaborative spirit, and commitment to professional development signify a new era of pedagogical excellence, empowering faculty members to thrive in the dynamic landscape of EMI higher education.
