Department of Political Science: Bridging the Past to Lead Taiwan's Future

Since its inception in 1947, the Department of Political Science at NTU has graduated a total of over 9,000 students, many of whom have gone on to become national leaders. Notable alumni include Vice President Lien Chan, President of the Judicial Yuan Lin Yang-Kang, and President of the Control Yuan Chien Fu, among others. Faculty members in the Department continue to contribute their knowledge and expertise to Taiwanese society and public affairs. Over the past decade, six faculty members have assumed leadership roles in various ministries and commissions in Taiwan, including the Executive Yuan, Control Yuan, Examination Yuan, Coordination Council for North American Affairs, National Security Council, and Executive Yuan Spokesperson. Furthermore, collaborative research conducted by the Department's faculty members has been cited as crucial references in government decision-making, reforms, and policy formulation.

The Department also hosts the widely acclaimed “Asian Barometer Survey,” an international public opinion survey program renowned for its significant influence in the global academic community. In terms of academic research contributions, several faculty members have received prestigious awards, including the National Professorship from the Ministry of Education, Academic Awards from the Ministry of Education, Outstanding Research Awards from the National Science and Technology Council, membership in the World Academy of Sciences, and the Future Earth Taipei Annual Achievement Award. Notably, three Academicians of the Academia Sinica in the Political Science Division of the National Science and Technology Council are esteemed members of the Department’s faculty.

Moreover, the Department actively engages in social projects within Taiwan, including initiatives such as the establishment of the Kim Shin Forum in collaboration with the Kim Koo Foundation in South Korea and the Citizen Science Development Forum, co-organized with the School of Forestry and Resource Conservation of NTU. By integrating theory with practice, the Department continues to lead progress in Taiwanese society.

Associate Professor Lin Tze-luen is honored with the 2022 Future Earth Taipei Annual Achievement Award hosted by the Academia Sinica.
